Leadership Message – Issue Twenty

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Resignation

It is with a heavy heart that I inform the community Fran Pastorelli has resigned from her position as Education Assistant at OLA. I wish Fran all the very best as she pursues other interests in the corporate world.

Interschool Athletics Faction Carnival

Congratulations to all the students who took part in the Interschool Athletics Carnival, at Perry Lakes, last Friday. Our girls came first, our boys came second and overall OLA came second to our archrival St Columba’s, Bayswater. I know all their ‘plays’ so we will be overtaking the mantle piece next year!! Thank you to Mr Allsop for once again doing a magnificent job in preparing the students for this year’s carnival.

NAIDOC Celebrations

What a moving experience we all had last Friday. The day commenced with the Acknowledgment of Country and smoking ceremony by an Elder, Barry Winmar, and a beautiful NAIDOC Mass. The students then had a photo taken in the shape and colours of the Aboriginal Flag. Straight after the photo, Dr Nathan Leber talked to the children about the Aboriginal culture and sang well known Australian songs reflecting the first Australians and the world’s oldest culture. Then the students participated in buddy activities centred around NAIDOC. The students thoroughly enjoyed the many activities planned during the day.

I would like to sincerely thank our NAIDOC Committee members, especially Stephanie Figueira, Candy McKay and the staff who assisted with the coordinating of the events and for making the day special, for all our students, and for giving them a greater understanding of our indigenous culture and history – Always Was, Always Will Be.

Sacrament of Penance

Congratulations to our Year 3 students who received the Sacrament of Penance last Thursday evening. For the first time at OLA, we held the celebration in the Sr Goretti Hall (due to Covid Restrictions) and our children didn’t miss a beat.

Thank you to Fr Ken, and the visiting priests, for celebrating the occasion with the children and for supporting the change of venue. Thank you also to our Year 3 Teachers who coordinated the event.

Volunteers’ Morning Tea Change of Date

The annual Volunteers’ Morning Tea has now been changed to Wednesday 2 December at 9.30am. It has been decided that this event will now be combined with the Grandparents and Mothers’ Morning Tea. We hope you can join us!
