Principal’s Message – Issue Eleven
Jul 1, 2020
Dear Parents and Caregivers
NAIDOC Celebrations
It has officially been announced that NAIDOC Week has been postponed, it will now be celebrated 8-15 November. We will distribute information about how this wonderful event will be recognised at OLA closer to the time.
Parents On-site
Commencing in Term 3, parents will be permitted to attend assemblies, masses, special events and enter classrooms. Thank you for your patience and support during the COVID-19 period.
Pupil Free Days
As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, the first two days in Term 2 (Monday 20 July and Tuesday 21 July) will be pupil free days. Originally, we had a pupil free day scheduled for Friday 29 May, however, I decided it was imperative to get back to a normal school life, as quickly as possible, hence the pupil free day was postponed until Term 3, Tuesday 21 July. From the original OLA annual school calendar, distributed to all families late 2019 and at the beginning of 2020, Monday 20 July was already scheduled as a pupil free day. Students return to school on Wednesday 22 July.
The OLA OSHC will be operating and if you require care for your children, please email our OLA OSHC Nominated Supervisor, Nicole Leach, at nicole.leach@cewa.edu.au

Semester One Reporting
We originally had planned for the Semester One Reports to become ‘live’ on Wednesday this week, however, we are experiencing a few technical difficulties with the interim templates. Parents will receive an SMS as soon as they are ‘live’. At this stage, I am advising parents it will be Friday. If you do not remember your username, your child’s class teacher can assist you. We do not have access to your passwords.
Farewell Staff
At the end of this term, we say farewell to Nicholas Erskine (Education Assistant), who will be focusing on the last six months of his teaching degree, Felicity Creagh, (Social Worker) and Brittany Mills (PE Teacher). We wish them all the very best in their future endeavours.
2020 Sacraments
Sacramental celebrations have now been scheduled and have been included in the updated Semester 2 Planner attached.
Free Dress – Friday 3 July
This Friday 3 July, will be a frees dress day for all students and staff, to celebrate the end of Term 2. This is not a fundraiser and students may wear appropriate warm clothing to end the term.
Assemblies
School assemblies will recommence in Week 2, Term 3 and weekly assemblies have been scheduled to catch up on the assemblies we have missed. The Premier has announced, recently, restrictions have been lifted and larger numbers can now gather. By the time we return next Semester, most restrictions would have been lifted. CEWA has also advised we can now proceed with assemblies, as long as we follow the protocols disseminated by the State and Commonwealth Governments. Please check the updated Semester 2 Planner for all updates.
Canteen
The canteen will continue to operate as a cashless canteen until further notice. Please continue to place your children’s orders online.
Bubs Play at OLA
We are pleased to announce OLA Bubs Play will recommence in Term 3. Our first session will be on Friday 24 July from 9am to 10.30 in Kindy M. Please note that morning tea will not be shared and all children will need their own morning tea and water. Bubs Play is for 0-4 years. Please contact the school should you or someone you know be interested in attending. Thank you.
The Fathering Project
Commencing next term, Mr De Pietro, Mr McIntyre and Mr Allsop will be coordinating The Fathering Project for our dads in the community. Information will be sent out to all fathers and father-figures, in our community, about the program and meetings to be scheduled. The Fathering Project, led by the staff members initially, will involve dads becoming more proactive in the lives of their children. More effective fathers, and father-figures, means a generation of children with happier and healthier futures. The Fathering Project aims to inspire and equip fathers and father-figures to positively engage with their children in their lives.
Did you know OLA has a registered Dads Group with The Fathering Project? Sign up to https://thefatheringproject.org/in-schools/join-a-group/?keywords=6059&group_state=Western+Australia and find lots of information on connecting with your children, using active listening, positive parenting and more. You’ll also receive weekly tips direct to your inbox and Fathering Channel invites for podcasts and expert webinars. Our Dads Group will also be hosting activities during the year for our Dads and father figures, with their children!
