RICE is Alive at OLA!

Music

Our music lessons this term are focussed on beat and rhythm. All our classes from Pre-Primary to Year 6 are working on a piece of music entitled ‘Rhythm Rocks at OLA.’  Each class is rehearsing its part, using a variety of instruments including recorders, xylophones, cajon drums, percussion cups, bucket drums and rhythm sticks. The music was specially arranged for us by Kaboom Percussion, and in Week 5, some of our classes enjoyed a preparatory workshop with Kaboom. The students participated fully, and demonstrated great respect for our visitors.

In Week 8, Kaboom personnel will video record all class performances and our students will have opportunity to showcase their excellence in rhythmic performance.
For further information on this project, see the music section of this newsletter.

HaSS Pre-Primary and Year 1

This term during HaSS we have been learning about what makes a family, who are our family members and what are the similarities and differences between families in the classroom. We have drawn and described the members of our family. We showed respect to others when we were taking turns discussing the members of our family. We learnt that we show respect when we accept that all families are different.

We drew our faces and placed them on a world map to show where our parents were born. We respect the things that people from other countries share with us.

In Year 1 this term during History, we have been exploring family life. We have been comparing families from the past and our families from the present. We used flash cards, Now and Then, and we decided if the pictures were from the present or past. We watched videos showing what was packed in students’ lunch boxes in the past and what school holidays were like in 1967. We discussed the differences and similarities between them. We showed respect when we listened to others sharing their ideas. The results were recorded on a Venn Diagram.

We are looking forward to having a special guest speaker coming to visit us soon. They will share with us information about their life and we are preparing questions to find out information from the past.

HaSS Years 2-6

We have been including the value of respect in all of our HaSS lessons across the year levels. In particular, the Year 5 students have been learning about respect for our Indigenous people as we research about the beginning of democracy. It is important to remember to include the many contributions of Indigenous people to our learning about Civics and Citizenship.

In Year 2 we began our lessons in History by reading, “When Frank Was Four,” by Alison Lester. The children used a timeline to draw or write about their own timeline. The value of respect was evident when the children participated in discussions about their own lives and they respectfully listened to and viewed information.

Italian Years PP-6

During Italian lessons this term we have been learning to talk about ourselves and we have made a few videos about it. Children demonstrated respect when they shared their information with me. We have also learnt about Carnevale, the special celebration that happens in Italy just before Lent.

In Upper Primary, we have done some research on Carnevale to find out what it is and why it is celebrated. In Junior Primary, we have made masks just like the ones they wear in Italy during this time. We have been really busy and we are looking forward to another term of learning!
