RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Kindy

Our Pre-Kindy class is a very large class now with 25 children! The children are learning to play, share and cooperate with each other. Through play, the children learn valuable social skills as they learn to get along with others and manage their emotions. Having to share play equipment and communicate effectively with others can be tricky for 3 year olds, but we are learning to use and manage these skills.

We practise the value of excellence when we tidy up our class. We talk about keeping play materials in their allocated areas, packing things away and helping each other to ensure that things are put away in the right places. We all help to make our room neat and tidy.

Ms Belinda Mitchell

Kindergarten G

We have had a great start to the term and have been very busy learning about our new theme, space. We have been reading lots of informational texts, viewing YouTube clips, learning songs about space and playing in our new space station themed dramatic play area.

In Kindy, we have also been talking about how we need to always try our best in everything we do and strive for excellence, especially as we will be going into Pre-Primary next year. We have discussed how it’s important to have a go, even when we may think we can’t do it. It’s also important to take pride in our work and to take our time. These are the little steps we can take towards excellence.

Mrs Elaine Fruvall

Pre-Primary G

What an awesome start to the term we have had in PPG! We have enjoyed lots of different things like Book Week, the Sports Carnival, dancing, our hospital incursion, learning, making robots using recycled 3D shapes, playing in the vet and under the sea areas, and building in the construction zone.

In class, we have been learning about the importance of excellence. We discussed how we can show excellence by putting in our best effort and trying our hardest all the time, and by being persistent when we can’t do something straight away. We showed excellence at the Sports Carnival by running as fast as we could, encouraging our peers and working together as a team to play games. In class, we have been showing excellence by trying our hardest to work towards achieving our own personal learning goals.

Miss Sabrina Saraceni

Year 1G

We have had a busy start to Term 4. The OLA Sport Carnival was a lot of fun and the Book Week dress up day saw us wearing our amazing costumes!

In Religion, we have been learning about and discussing Reconciliation. We have talked about:

  • Some choices are more important than others.
  • Making choices can be difficult.
  • What happens when people make choices that show love?

Dance lessons have started and we are very excited! The dance teacher is helping us to work in small groups to create our own dance steps, being symmetrical and ensuring that everyone’s faces can be seen.

In Mathematics, we have been learning about Australian coins, we have ordered them according to size and value. We looked at what animals, people and emblems are on Australian coins.

Mrs Maree Noonan

Year 2G

This year has flown by in Year 2, bring on Term 4! Our class has been demonstrating the value of excellence in Mathematics by not giving up and persisting with challenges. We have been putting our brains to work by learning about possible outcomes for all situations, by determining if a situation is likely, unlikely, certain or impossible. We now can confidently say that it is impossible for an elephant to teach us Mathematics at OLA. Our class has been able to form rich conversations based around this concept, as we need to use our prior knowledge and life experiences to solve these problems.

In writing, we are beginning to learn more about the genre of persuasive writing. As we are learning about this style of writing, we are starting to experiment with forming reasons and examples to persuade others. This is a challenging topic, but in Year 2G we want to show excellence by always doing our best. Our class cannot wait to share with our parents the finished expositions. Let’s hope we can persuade them to give us ice-cream for dinner.

Miss Jade Rotondo

Year 3G

It’s Term 4 already and it is proving to be a busy one for Year 3G! Most importantly we are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Penance in Week 4. We have been examining our conscience and decision-making strategies in class and have participated in the Parent/Child workshop and Retreat Day at school.

It was with great excitement that the Year 3s participated in a STEM Day at Servite College. All children demonstrated excellence in the pursuit of making a marble run that lasted for 10 seconds. Amazing creativity and resilience were on display during this time and the completed marble runs looked phenomenal.

Mrs Julie Pilatti and Mrs Anella Tollis

Year 4G

Term 4 has started with a bang for us! We are in search of all things ‘excellent’ this term as we reach the peak of our learning in Year 4. We are focussed on the work we do in class, how we respond to each other and how we reach out to others. We know that excellence is about giving the best effort we can. We do this each and every day.

We wrote some great persuasive letters to our parents last week to convince them to allow us to have a pet! We eagerly await their response about this. Our writing was excellent, we shared our ideas and then did the very best that we could!

Participation in our dancing classes has been excellent! Through dance, we are demonstrating some great team work and creativity. Our sessions seem to go really quickly! Watch for some great dance moves!

Mrs Dianne Scoble

Year 5G

We have commenced Term 4 with much excitement and work, as we conclude our last term of Year 5.

Week 1 revolved around the Faction Athletics Carnival, practising our team games and preparing our faction chants. Congratulations to all students for the excellence, effort and supportive nature they demonstrated, with O’Mara taking out the shield on the day.

In the classroom, we have begun thinking and writing our ‘Year 6 Student Leadership’ speeches. We will focus on what we can offer the OLA community as leaders of the school striving for excellence in all that we do next year.

Our speeches will be heard by the other classes and teachers. They will vote for the students they feel will endeavour to follow and implement our OLA values.

Mr D and Miss Figueira are reading, Danny the Champion of the World, as our class novel, which tied in nicely with ‘Book Week’. Many of us dressed up as our favourite characters.

We are looking forward to the remainder of the term and the many exciting events coming our way.

Mr Bruno De Pietro

Year 6G

Term 4 has got off to the most amazing start. Last week the students of 6G went to Nanga Bush Camp. Here they were able to display the school value of excellence through a range of team building and individual activities. The students were forced to get outside of their comfort zone, and they met these challenges head on. The students experienced rafting, rock climbing, zip lining, bush walking, orienteering and many more action-packed activities. The instructors were very impressed with the excellent attitude and behaviour that was always on display (some of the teams even broke camp records) The students were excellent ambassadors for OLA and our School Community can be very proud of them.
