RICE is Alive at OLA!

Kindergarten G

The start of the term has definitely been a different one. We have missed not having all the Kindy children back but have sent them lots of videos and messages to keep in contact.

We have been exploring the weather and the four seasons in Kindy. We have read lots of books and have had many conversations about the changes in the weather. We have even been ‘rainbow detectives’ searching for rainbows when the sun is shining after the rain. We are yet to find one at school!

Last week we created a rainbow. The children could paint, use oil pastels or cut strips of coloured card to make a 3D rainbow. They then thought about objects in the world around us that are the same colours as the rainbow.

We have also been talking about making good choices in Kindy. We have read books and used puppets to help demonstrate this. We have talked about what happens when you make a choice and the contrast between the right choice and the wrong choice. This is what integrity looks like in Kindy.

Pre-Primary G

What a different start to the term we have had in PPG! We have enjoyed coming back to school, for some of us after a long time away. In class we have been learning about the importance of integrity. We discussed how we can show integrity by making good choices, even when no-one is watching, and how telling the truth and being honest shows integrity.

We worked together to brainstorm how we can show integrity at home by setting the table, cleaning up mess and helping with the chores, especially for our mums on Mother’s Day. We even made some special gifts for our mums to show them how special they are. We listened to the story ‘Ruthie and the (Not So Teeny Tiny Lie)’ and discussed what choices Ruthie made, and how she showed integrity. In class we have been working hard to show integrity during our learning and play, by being honest, making good choices and playing nicely.

Year 1G

1G children were glad to see their friends and settled well into their work. We have started our Literacy small group work and the children have shown integrity in how they have been working in groups. They have strived to complete individual work independently and have worked quietly so they did not disturb other working groups. The class completed a number assessment and they displayed integrity by finding their own space and did not look at other’s work.

In preparation for Mother’s Day, we discussed how our Mum’s help us to be honest, follow rules and listen to others with respect. They also help us to be fair when playing with our friends. We talked about how integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is looking.

Year 2G

WOW! It is Term 2 already! This year in 2G has gone super quick. We have been developing our school value of integrity. We have discussed the importance of being honest to ourselves and when communicating with our friends. In Maths, the children have been learning about multiplication especially their two times tables, by singing and dancing along to some fun songs. They have also been exploring different ways they can represent multiplication by using equal groups and groups of strategies. They have been using different materials like blocks, counters and Lego to show their understanding of multiplication. 2G have loved learning about multiplication and are looking forward to learning their other times tables songs.

The students were given a Technology problem solving challenge to make a tunnel using connector straws. They needed to work as a team, which meant listening to others, answering and asking questions and working together. This task made the children think about the concept of persistence, if something did not work they needed to keep trying and NOT GIVE UP! This project had its challenges, however, in the end the children worked together and created a great tunnel.

Year 3G

We are so very proud of all the students in Year 3G. Whether they have been working in class or remotely, the integrity and resilience that every child has shown this term has been absolutely amazing. All children have returned to class with such enthusiasm and focus to learn.

We have achieved a lot in a very small amount of time. We created a tally and graph of the colours of cars on Grand Promenade for 10 minutes. This proved very tricky as there was a lot of traffic at 2:40pm! We have researched and written about an animal and presented this information as a poster, which the children were very excited to do. Finally, to celebrate our mums, we created beautiful portraits and newspaper articles about them. The students were all very proud with how they have turned out. Bring on Week 3!

Year 4G

Our time together as a smaller group has given us great opportunity to reflect on our OLA values and ensure that we are always putting them in place. One area of focus has been playing Four Square! We used the start of Term 2 as a way to practise our integrity and demonstrate this value. We were taught the rules of Four Square and we found that by following the same set of rules, it made the game so much better! We found that once we understood how the game worked it was so much easier for us to accept ‘going out’ when we were out, and we showed our integrity by simply following the rules and being honest and truthful to ourselves and our players of the game. Now, we know how to play properly, how to stay in (we are still competitive!) and how to ‘go out with integrity’. We know that integrity means that we are honest and truthful in our actions. Now, we are making sure that we take this value and apply it to everything else we do! We have loved learning about this value by playing the game of Four Square. We now have the task to be sure that all our classmates have the opportunity to know the rules and know how to play the game well – this is part of our approach to integrity.

Year 5G

The Year 5G class has returned to school in these unprecedented times with maturity and a great attitude as a whole. We have shared stories of how they spent their holidays, limited to the company of family and pets alike. The common theme being the excitement to return to school and be surrounded by their peers.

I can confidently say that 5G have settled into the term well and are ready to dive into the work in the coming weeks. They have shown a readiness to learn and build on their abilities in the classroom which compliments the integrity of the group. The students recognise that displaying integrity involves being gracious, hardworking and helpful to themselves and others in the OLA community.

Year 6G

In Year 6G the students have returned to school and have settled back in very quickly.  They have displayed great resilience over the past few weeks and every student rose admirably to the challenges of home schooling. The students displayed excellent integrity by completing the home schooling tasks to the very best of their abilities. On top of this they used the digital platforms very sensibly to seek clarification and understanding.

Since coming back to school, we have been going through lots of work such as learning about 2D and 3D shapes, how to calculate the volume of cubes and rectangular prisms, how to make a persuasive verbal argument, learning the 8 petitions of The Lord’s Prayer and creating a 3D hand art. The students who were home schooling were also able to complete these tasks and stay up to date with the children at school via our digital platforms such as Teams and SeeSaw. The students should feel very proud of the integrity that they have displayed towards their learning during these unprecedented times.
