RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Primary

We have been using our amazing brains and bodies to do lots of measuring in Pre-Primary. We have measured the length of ourselves and objects around the school. We have been using our muscles to heft objects to compare their mass. We have also been getting a bit wet measuring the capacity of different containers! We have been learning about tallies and graphs and can see everyone’s favourite fruit, type of weather and have even graphed the colour of smarties in the packet!

In Religious Education, we have been sharing ideas about the meaning of Jesus’ Commandment, ‘Love one another as I have loved you’. All of the children have a deep understanding of how we can share our love for other people, and we are trying every day to show compassion to others and put these words into practice.

Year 2

The Year 2s have had a great past two weeks expanding our learning. In Mathematics, we have been learning our two times tables and learning tricks to double two-digit numbers. We have found this topic fun as we are relating it all to our two times tables, and we have also used MAB blocks to assist us when doubling two-digit numbers. By the end of this week we are going to be doubling superstars.

In Year 2, we demonstrate the school value of excellence when we are learning and presenting our work at school. We have been learning about reports and writing our own information reports about Perth Zoo animals that we selected ourselves. Our information reports are exciting because they allow us to learn more about the animals we have in Perth Zoo. We have loved learning, researching and sharing our writing with each other this term.

Year 4

In Year 4, we have been focusing on children’s rights and have been discussing that everyone has the right to feel safe at all times. This directly links to the Protective Behaviours topics we have covered this year. As a class, we spoke about how these rights are directly related to the school value of respect. We aim to respect everyone through our actions and words, we recognise the importance of treating our peers with respect, disagreeing respectfully and being respectful of other people’s opinions.

On Thursday, we were lucky enough to host a Skype call with Enrico Palermo (Sophia’s uncle) who is the President of the Spaceship Company in the United States. Enrico spoke to the students about his career journey and how he came to work at the Spaceship Company and Virgin Galactic. He showed us a time-lapse of how they made the Unity spaceship, and real photos from its trip into space. At the end, the students asked lots of interesting questions that Enrico answered with great detail. We were so appreciative of the time and effort he put into this out of this world opportunity for us, and we thank Mrs Brunini’s for helping to organise this.

Year 6

The Sacrament of Confirmation has been the highlight of the past few weeks. Friday evening was mostly 6G candidates along with students from the Parish. Saturday was predominately the 6M group, along with a couple of students from 6G. We showed integrity throughout these days. Both masses were poignant, in that we felt connected as a group along with our sponsors, families and peers. Rehearsals with our teachers and Father Ken, prior to the day ensured we knew what was expected of us. We were proud of our classmates, how they carried out the many duties during the Mass such as reading and singing, which made it even more special. Miss Figueira and Mr De Pietro shed a sneaky tear for us, how happy they were for being able to share this special event with us.
