RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Kindy

This term in Pre-Kindy, we are cooking and learning to try new foods.  Sometimes young children can be fussy eaters, reluctant to try new foods.  At Pre-Kindy, we talk about healthy food choices and trying something new, even though we know that we might have to be brave about it! This is how we show integrity. So far, we have made fried rice and all the children not only tried the rice, they ate many bowls full and then made it at home with their families. Last week, we made banana smoothies. They were delicious! Our motto is ‘You don’t have to like it but be brave and try it’. We encourage our friends to try the foods, but we respect that everyone can make their own choice.

Kindy

Can you believe this is our final term of Kindy! We are now starting to prepare for Pre-Primary. We are trying to be more independent and work towards problem solving when we are playing with our friends by making good choices. This is how we can show integrity. We are also working hard on showing respect to our environment. We look after our classroom by taking care of the toys and by keeping our classroom clean and tidy.

This term, we have started with the theme of Space and we are learning lots of interesting facts. This week we read the story Mooncake, which is about a bear travelling to the moon to see what it would taste like. So, we decided we would make our own mooncake and decorated it with lots of shiny and sparkly decorations. They tasted delicious too!

Year 1

Wow, we have begun Term Four! Last week we had the Sports Carnival and it was so much fun.

In Mathematics, we are learning how to describe, recognise and order Australian coins according to their value. We have worked hard and showed respect during maths groups as we work together to complete the money activities and games. We even got to use real money!

In Religion, we are learning about ‘Belonging’ and how we can show integrity in all the different groups that we belong to i.e. in our family, class, school, sporting teams and parish.

Year 3

Welcome back to Term 4. Year 3 has had a busy start to the term! In preparation for Penance, we enjoyed a parent and student workshop. Claire led the workshop, and students enjoyed completing activities with their parents.

This week, students participated in our Penance Retreat at Schoenstatt Shrine. Sister Lisette gave us a detailed visit to the Shrine which was a beautiful experience for everyone. Sister also spoke of the time spent in countries to help feed the hungry, students showed compassion when thinking of how they could help. There were activities throughout the day and we even squeezed in time on the playground!

On Thursday evening, Year 3 students celebrated their First Reconciliation. Fr Ken led the celebration with some visiting priests. It was a beautiful evening and we are very proud of our Year 3 students.

Year 5

The students in Year 5 have been participating in a STEM challenge to create a pair of shoes only from newspaper. They have been very creative with their designs.

In Art, the students have been using newspapers to create papier mache masks from cultures around the world. They are currently a work in progress.

Staying on the theme of newspapers, the students have been learning to write a newspaper recount and have completed excellent reports of last week’s Sports Carnival.
