RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Primary

What a fantastic excursion we had to Brownes Dairy on Wednesday 11 September. All of the children were so excited to jump on the bus and visit Brownes. Farmer Damien was up early that morning to bring one of his wonderful cows to visit us, we even got the chance to milk it! We saw inside the factory, where the people and robots pack the dairy products to head out to the shops for us to buy. The best bit, voted by all, was getting to try lots of the yummy yoghurt that Brownes make in their test kitchen.

The children were a credit to the school during the excursion and showed respect and integrity the whole time we were away from school. Integrity can be defined as doing the right thing even when no-one is watching, and our children certainly showed this while on our excursion, making great behaviour choices.

Year 2

Busy times in Year 2 with the children writing narratives, learning about mass and volume in Mathematics and exploring the different types of farms that provide us with the food that we eat. In Religion, the children have learnt about how Jesus used his special skills to work with and for others. We created comic strips to retell the story of, Jesus and the Blind Man, in which Jesus showed great compassion for the poor blind man and cured him. Through Jesus’ example, the children have been able to identify other acts of compassion in their lives.

Year 4

Last Wednesday, we were lucky enough to have Scitech come in for the Lab on Legs STEM program. As we walked in the doors, the students were excited to see the tech pack that Scitech had laid out for them – laptops, cords AND an Edison robot! The Scitech presenters, Lincoln and Georgia, talked the students through how to use and program the Edisons to follow different commands. The students had a great time road testing, troubleshooting and sumo wrestling with the Edisons.

This week, we have been testing out different possible future occupations – research-writer and artist. In Writing, we researched a famous artist, sorted through relevant information and wrote our own biography about them. The students then selected a notable artwork from their chosen artist to recreate. Look at their fantastic masterpieces as they continually strive for excellence! Watch out Van Gogh!

Year 6

After the excitement and added calories, according to Mr D and Miss F, of MKR we have commenced our oral speeches. Our assignment was to choose any subject we felt confident or passionate about, compose a speech relating to the topic and to speak to our peers for two and a half to three minutes. To present, we stand in front of our classmates and share our ideas and opinions with them.

We commenced our speeches in Week 8 with numerous speakers a day. We have been eager to listen to our peers’ stories and information. The students’ individual personalities have shone through with laughter relating to; phobias of caterpillars, cricket fast bowlers and mums in cleaning mode. The odd tear was shed too when discussing the 9/11 terrorist attack, homelessness and world poverty.

Mr D, Miss F, Mr Morris and Mrs Erskine have commented regularly on the high standard of the talks and the respect all students have displayed when listening and discussing the topics.
