RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Kindy

At Pre-Kindy, we have been learning how to cooperate with others, take turns and share. When one of our friends is upset because we have taken their toy or pushed in front of them, we have a conversation about how the person is feeling and why they are feeling that way. This helps the child to express themselves and communicate their problems to others, and it makes other children be aware of how their actions affect others. We also talk about noticing if people are sad or angry and what we can do to show compassion towards others and help them.

Kindy

The highlight of Week 5 in Kindy was the Book Week dress up day and parade.  The children were so excited and proud to come to school dressed up as their favourite book characters and they enjoyed sharing their special books with the class. It was so exciting to go to the ‘big school’ and see all of the other children dressed up for the parade.

At Kindy, we talk about showing compassion towards others. We have discussions about ways in which we can help people who are unhappy. We look out for people who are sad or lonely and we try to use these strategies to help one another.

Year 1

What a busy week we have had in Year One getting ready for the Performing Arts Festival! We enjoyed going to the Vasto Club to perform our two songs called ‘Little Drops of Rain’ by Carol Troutman Wiggins and ‘Hello to all the Children of the World’ by Susan Shane-Linder. Thank you to Mr San Diego who played the piano and our amazing Mrs McAuliffe who conducted. It was a wonderful experience to watch the other seven schools perform their songs. Our teachers thought we showed the value of excellence through our singing and behaviour!

It was great to see so many families in our classrooms for Open Night. The children were so excited and proud to show their work!

We are looking forward to Fathers’ Day and we are working hard to surprise our dads! We have enjoyed writing our descriptions and drawing dad’s portrait.

We wish all dads, stepdads, grandads and other father figures a restful and fun Fathers’ Day!

Year 3

The Year 3 students showed respect for their school when they represented Our Lady’s Assumption on Wednesday at the Performing Arts Festival. The combined Year 3 Choir sang beautifully, stood up so proudly and were focused on their conductor, Mrs McAuliffe – it was wonderful to see.

Students also participated in a series of Helen O’Grady Drama Workshops and enjoyed developing their drama and acting skills. Terrific effort Year 3 students.

In Maths, we have been looking at different coin combinations and using strategies to count coins. Great work Year 3s!

Year 5

The Years 5s have been working hard this past two weeks in lots of different learning areas. They have shown the school value of integrity by meeting assignment deadlines and producing work to the best of their abilities.

In Maths, the students had to create maps of an island and plot coordinates to different locations.

In Writing, the students produced fantastic explanation texts on how different natural phenomena occur.

In Health, the students had to use a variety of fruit and veg to create a tasty “Rainbow Salad” at home. They had to identify what nutrients and vitamins their salad provided for their bodies.
