RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Kindy

At Pre-Kindy, we have been busy preparing for Mother’s Day. We have talked about our special mums and what they do for us. The children painted a picture of their mums. They also made a special gift and card.

At Pre-Kindy, we teach the children how to show respect to each other. When they are building with blocks, we teach them to respect each other’s space and towers. When they play with the toys at Pre-Kindy, we teach them to have gentle hands and look after our things.

Kindy

It’s been a busy start to the term preparing for our Mother’s Day Morning on Monday. We are very excited about spending some time with our mums at Kindy and doing some very special activities with them, but shhhhhhh it’s a surprise!

We have also started to talk about the weather and the four seasons. We have been curious to learn about rainbows. We have talked about the seven colours of the rainbow and discussed how they are formed. We also produced some amazing artwork on rainbows too.

In Kindy, we have been talking about being respectful. We need to respect our friends and our environment and remember to be kind and gentle. We have discussed how we respect other children’s work and how we don’t knock down other children’s buildings for example. We respect our friends by speaking kindly, sharing and playing nicely with them.

We are looking forward to another wonderful term in Kindy.

Year 1

We have settled into Term Two well and we are showing so much more confidence in our work.

Last week in reading, we focused on Anzac Day and we reflected on how our armed services help to keep Australia safe as we read the story Anzac Ted and completed lots of activities.

In mathematics, we are learning how to skip count in tens, fives and twos. We have played lots of games and we are showing the value of integrity as we play our games. It is fun when we are honest and truthful during our games.

We are preparing for Mother’s Day and have enjoyed painting our mothers and writing about them. We hope our mums enjoy their special day on Sunday!

Year 3

Last week, Year 3 and the school community gathered with compassion to honour the first ANZACs and those who followed their proud example by serving our country. Mr Oliver Lovelle and Mrs Joan Daglish from the Mount Lawley-Inglewood RSL were guests at our service and Mr Lovelle shared a reflection with pride on what it meant to be Australian.

In Mathematics, students have been exploring fractions. They have enjoyed the activities related to fractions of one whole, and fractions of a collection. In Reading, Year 3 students have been learning how to identify the sequence of events in a text. Our paint brushes have been out during Art and we have created a ‘Field of Poppies’ which has become a symbol of remembrance, of those who died in the war or who still serve.

Year 5

Last Tuesday, Fremantle was invaded by the Year 5s of OLA! Tours, games, adventure, a cannon blast, tunnel walk and more! That was the Year 5 excursion to Fremantle Prison. On Tuesday 30 April, we all set out to Fremantle. Our adventure began with morning tea on the grounds of the Prison, right next to where Moondyne Joe escaped! We then split into two groups and had a look at all the cells. Lunch and a play at the park at the Esplanade meant that we could enjoy the sunshine and the wide-open spaces. After a short walk, we arrived at the Round House to see the cannon blast. What fun! We learnt so much about the 1:00pm timing of the cannon and ball drop. A highlight of our tour of the Round House was seeing Mr McIntyre, and then Ms Knight, in the stocks! The students’ behaviour and attitude were excellent throughout the day and they were a great credit to OLA. Other members of the public commented that our students were the most “Considerate and respectful school they had seen at the park.”  Well done Year 5!
