RICE is Alive at OLA!

HASS

Pre Primary

This term during Geography, we are learning about caring for special places. We have investigated the features of familiar places, explored what makes them special and described how we can look after these places. We discussed how each place is special to individuals for different reasons and special places have features that can be seen, heard, smelled and felt. We showed respect during the discussion when listening to everyone’s ideas.

During History, our focus has been on learning about past and present technology. Students viewed a set of cards and sorted them into the correct categories: past or present. Students showed excellence when completing this activity. Students were given cards with pictures of items that were used in the past. They predicted what the item was used for, by using iPads, they scanned the barcode to learn more about the item.

We are loving learning about the amazing inventions of the past.

Year 1

In Year 1 this term during Geography, we have been exploring how weather (e.g. rainfall, temperature, sunshine, wind) and seasons vary between places, and the terms used to describe them. We drew symbols for weather vocabulary (e.g. cloudy, rainy) and recorded the daily weather using these symbols. We showed one another the symbols we drew, and students demonstrated compassion by commenting about each other’s symbols in a positive way.

Year 2

During Geography this term, we have been exploring the connections of people in Australia to other places in Australia. Students completed their homework, with parental assistance, and wrote about three places in Australia that they are connected to. Students answered questions with integrity. On a map of Australia, using atlases and the information collected, we located the three places students are connected to. Students drew places on the map, wrote an explanation and created a key. It was amazing to see how many places in Australia we are connected to.

Year 3

In Year 3 we have been learning about the origins and significance of celebrations around the world.  The children demonstrated a lot of enthusiasm in their research. As we discussed how different people live in various places around the world, the value of compassion was reviewed. Have a look at the fabulous “Itty Bitty Book” of research created by Year 3. In small groups, the Year 3 children have been working on a song for learning the Australian states, territories, capital cities and features of Australia.  It’s been a lot of fun singing and learning in Year 3!

Year 4

Year 4 children have been exploring our nations natural resources. They had to identify and label from a dozen choices all set up in boxes what were timber, water and mineral resources. Our RICE values of excellence and respect were integrated in the lesson when Krystal observed we achieve excellence when we all try our best. Alex C thought they were showing respect by carefully observing and manipulating the boxes in small groups. Each group had to decide the resource and label it as timber, water and minerals i.e. wood chips and blocks and shredded paper, ice cubes, pictures of Niagara Falls (Canadian side) and water, and finally gems like opal, pearl and sapphire and minerals like gold, silver and copper were explored. A few children brought in their own rock collections too – fabulous!  Enjoy the photos from Year 4!

Year 5

Year 5 children have been demonstrating the value of integrity in their HaSS classes. During an assessment on “Mobile Madness” children had to research the purchasing of a phone and living within their economic means. Integrity means making sensible choices that are right for you and others. We are re-visiting the topic of factors that shape the human environment and reviewing what we learnt about bushfires. We remember and pray for all the people affected by the catastrophic bushfires both here in Western Australia and over east.

Year 6

Year 6 students are learning about sustainability. They thought the RICE value of respect applied to the lesson where we researched groundwater replenishment. Students were unsure of how they felt about using recycled water. Sophia, Grace and Tiana came up with several ideas about how to save water: taking shorter showers, washing and conditioning your hair in the laundry trough, and thinking about the length of your showers.
