National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime is a celebration of reading together, where over one million children at schools, home or libraries all over Australia get to listen to the same story at the same time. This year the story, Give Me Some Space!, written by Australian Author Philip Bunting taught us all about exploring space, with the important message of taking care of planet Earth.

Thank you to Mr Enrico Palermo, Head of the Australian Space Agency, for coming to read the story to 3G and 6M. The students loved the opportunity to ask questions about our Solar System and space exploration.

Kindy, Pre-Primary, Year 2 and 3M joined Mrs Dale in the library to share the story together. We learnt so many interesting facts, did you know that the Milky Way tastes like raspberries? This is due to the chemical compound ethyl formate that is found in the atmosphere! All students listened so well and shared lots of interesting facts that they knew about space, we had a great time learning from each other.

Our Year 1 students were treated to a very special excursion to Dianella Library. They got to watch a recording of astronaut Dr Shannon Walker reading this book in zero gravity from the International Space Station. After this they enjoyed craft time, making rockets and UFOs. When they returned to class, they continued working with the space theme, writing about what it would be like to be astronauts and using the green screen to take photos in space!

Year 4 and 5, with 6G also had the opportunity to watch Dr Walker’s reading in their classrooms. Families may like to watch this video at home together, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

We hope you will keep sharing stories together at home, it is such a joy to read and learn together!
