RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Primary

In Pre-Primary, we are learning about keeping ourselves healthy. We have talked about the importance of good hygiene, like washing our hands with soap, covering our mouth when sneezing and coughing and making sure tissues are used for noses and then put in the bin. We have discussed healthy food choices and eating foods which give our body the energy that we need.

On Friday 17 May, both classes walked over to Dianella Plaza for an excursion to Woolworths. We saw so many healthy and bright-coloured fruits and vegetables and even got to wear our very own apron and hat. We walked through the very cold freezer and out to the back deck, and then had a sample of our choice of fruit. We even took our own Woolworths pack home! The children showed the value of excellence in their fantastic behaviour and listening skills and were commended by the Woolworths staff for how well they conducted themselves.

Year 2

The Year 2s have been very busy over the past two weeks. In Mathematics, we are learning all about time, we have been revising o’clock and half past time and now branching out into learning about a quarter to and quarter past time. Time is a tricky concept, but we are working very hard in class, and taking our time to learn about time. By the end of Year 2, we are going to be time experts!

We also had a very special visit from Scitech last Friday. We got to go into the Space Dome and learnt all about the amazing planets that are in our Solar System. We participated in a workshop where we had to pretend that we lived on Mars and we had to make a shelter that could protect our little person from the wild weather on the planet. We had the best time learning all about space and we loved getting creative when making our houses for Mars.

In Religion, we have been learning about the Fourth Commandment, ‘Honour your father and mother’. We have learnt that we need to show our school value of respect not only when we are at school, but at home towards our parents and other family members. We have enjoyed learning about the Fourth Commandment as we have loved sharing and learning about all the ways our classmate’s love, care for and respect their parents.

Year 4

Last Friday, the Year 4s went to Woolworths at Dianella Plaza to participate in the Fresh Food Tour. We had a great time seeing the variety of produce in the store and sampling some juicy watermelon! A BIG thank you to the parent volunteers who came along with us.

This week, in recognition of National Reconciliation Week, we designed posters to promote this year’s theme – Grounded in Truth: Walk Together in Courage. The significance of the week generated great discussion, with many students seeing the connection with our RICE values. We discussed the value of integrity and how we can model this value in our interactions with others as we strive to live together in harmony. Some of our poster designs are attached below.

Year 6

This past week has, once again, been an exciting and full week for us all in Year 6. Our Confirmation journey was further enhanced during our Parent-Child Workshop, sharing our experiences and our path heading forward with our parents and peers. Our Confirmation Retreat was also another opportunity to gain an insight into our Confirmation commitment. Exploring through discussions, role plays, team building activities, the origin of the Sacrament and how best to use our gifts once we have been touched by the Holy Spirit.

This week is National Reconciliation Week. The students in Year 6 Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) have been researching various topics related to Australia as a nation, including democracy, freedom, change and reconciliation. In Mrs Barclay’s HASS classes, they have presented in groups using slides, a poster or a drama. Topics included Clash of Cultures, Catalyst for Change, The Road to Reconciliation, To You We Say Sorry and A Woman’s Right to Vote. The enthusiasm was terrific, and the students had wonderful insights in their written reflections about the need for reconciliation.
