RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Kindy

At Pre-Kindy, we read the story of Noah’s Ark and we talked about the rainbow that God put in the sky as a sign of His love for us. Some children painted beautiful rainbows on the easel, and we made rainbow toast. We also conducted a rainbow experiment with Skittles on a plate with some warm water.  It was so amazing to see the colours dissolve into the middle of the plate.

When we teach the value of excellence in Pre-Kindy, we teach the children to always listen carefully, follow instructions and try their best. When you are 3 years old, life can sometimes be a rush and at other times it is very slow. When children complete tasks at Pre-Kindy, we ask them to take their time and do things properly.

Kindy

In Kindy we have been exploring the weather and the four seasons. We have read lots of books and have had many conversations about the changes in the weather. We love watching the changes in the trees at the front of the school too.

This week, we read a story called ‘Big Rain Coming’, an Aboriginal Dreaming story about the anticipation of rain during drought. We painted our favourite picture from the book and then retold the story to the teacher. We are really proud of the artwork created.

In Kindy, we have been talking about how we need to always try our best in everything we do and strive for excellence. It’s important to have a go, even when we may think we can’t do it. It’s also important to take pride in our work and to take our time. These are the little steps we can take towards excellence.

Year 1

The children were excited to see the big inflated insects hanging in our classroom this week as we begin to learn about information texts. We are learning how to write a report and we have focused on the classification and the description of a butterfly. We enjoyed making our symmetrical painting of the butterfly too!

We thank Montana, from Chisolm College who this week completed her Workplace Learning Program in our classrooms.

On Wednesday we went to the Dianella Library for the National Simultaneous Storytime. We listened to the book Alpacas with Maracas and completed a fun activity. We used active listening and showed respect as we enjoyed listening to the story.  Lily thanked Clare, the librarian for reading the story to us.

Year 3

We have had a very busy two weeks in Year 3! Last week, students joined Year 3 and Year 5 students across Australia to complete the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. We were all very proud of them, displaying maturity, concentration and integrity during their assessments.

In Mathematics, we have been looking at the features of 3D shapes, and rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. We have been creating our own prayers in Religious Education and it’s been very special sharing them with the class. On Friday, 3G entertained the school with their Assembly item and we all went home singing the times tables. Way to go 3G!

Year 5

In Year 5, we have been learning about the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit. We have learnt that the Holy Spirit strengthens our compassion to others by doing what is right and best for people in every circumstance, being humble and considerate to everyone and also avoiding harshness to others. The Year 5s have created posters about how the Holy Spirit has guided people in their lives.
