RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Kindy

In Pre-Kindy, we have been learning about flowers. We have looked at different types of flowers and tried to name some simple flower parts, like the roots, stem, leaves and flower. We read the story, The Tiny Seed by Eric Carl then looked at some sunflower seeds. The children then drew and painted their own sunflower. We think they are budding artists!

In Pre-Kindy, we try to teach children to recognise and express their emotions. We tell stories about times when children are sad, and we wonder what a sad face looks like. We then discuss what we should do when we see that someone is sad. We encourage children to use these ideas in their play. This is how we teach the value of compassion.

Kindy

In Kindy, we have been exploring nature. We have looked closely at flowers and the parts of a flower. We have been investigating leaves and have loved watching the leaves change colour on the trees around our school. We planted broad bean seeds and watched and recorded the changes from seed to plant. We have thanked God for all his amazing creations.

This week, we read the story, Not a Stick by Antoinette Portis, which demonstrates how children use their imagination when playing with natural items. In the story, the stick becomes a magic wand, a sword and a horse to ride on. We asked the children to use their imaginations to create a picture with a stick.

We have also been talking about being kind to our friends and how we can show compassion. When a friend has hurt themselves, we can go up to them, ask them if they are ok, ask them if they need help and we can help cheer them up. If a friend is sad, we can do the same. If a friend has no one to play with, we can ask them to join in and play with us. These are some of the ways we can show compassion in our Kindy classroom.

Year 1

Last Friday, Year 1 visited Scitech. The learning intention for the excursion was to learn about the weather and seasons, day and night, and light concepts. We went into the Planetarium and we were amazed at the wonders of the night sky. We also watched a show called, Tilt, which was about the seasons and the weather. Then we had time to explore the exciting activities on the main floor. We had lots of fun! We are now able to complete activities with the knowledge and understanding gained at Scitech and we will aspire for excellence in our work.

Year 3

Fractions, fractions, fractions! Year 3 have been immersed in fractions this week. Denominators, numerators and equivalent fractions, we are learning all the correct language about fractions.

In Science, we are looking at the Earth and Space, which connected perfectly with our Scitech Incursion. We entered the Space Dome and heard lots of interesting facts about our night skies. Then we participated in a workshop, making a shelter that was strong enough to endure very strong winds on Mars.

Year 3 have been focusing on our school value of respect. This has linked with our Religious Education unit, which is all about making good choices. Understanding that we can show respect to others in the classroom, when we are outside playing and when we are at home.

Year 5

Over the past few weeks, we have been looking at tolerance, diversity and maintaining healthy positive relationships in Health. We discovered that it is so important to have diversity in our world. Everyone brings something special and unique to the table. We also decided that it is really important to create caring and quality relationships with people. To have a good relationship there are certain qualities we look for. In Year 5, we decided that we must have RESPECT, PATIENCE, LOYALTY, COMPASSION but most importantly TRUST and HONESTY. These are just a few of the important qualities we look for in friends and all of our relationships.

Integrity is probably one of the most challenging values to uphold, that whole idea of being honest and making moral choices. It is very hard to stand up for what is right and to be truthful in all our thoughts and actions. We have been learning strategies to stand up and tell others, especially our friends, when they are not being kind or thoughtful to others. Everyone can benefit from having someone point them in the right direction when they stray from God’s path.
