RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Kindy

In Pre-Kindy, we have been learning how to cooperate, take turns and to share with each other. When one of our friends is upset because we have taken their toy, knocked over their building or pushed in front of them, we have a conversation about how their friend is feeling and why they are feeling that way. This helps the children to express themselves and communicate their problems to others, and it makes them become aware of how their actions affect others.

We also talk about noticing how people are feeling, especially if they are sad or angry and what we can do to show compassion and help them.

Ms Belinda Mitchell

Kindergarten G

We have had a great start to the term in Kindy. These past couple of weeks, we have been engaged in lots of sensory and messy play. We have gotten our hands (and sometimes our clothes) very dirty and we have loved every minute of it. We have done finger painting, played with slimy goop, painted using cars and trucks and played with coloured spaghetti, just to name a few.

We have also talked a lot about Jesus and what a kind and caring man he was. We have read stories and discussed the many ways Jesus showed love. We have talked about ways that we can show love too like Jesus did. We can be kind to our friends and family, we can share, we can be thoughtful and considerate, we can ask others to join in with us as we play, we can ask others if they are ok, if they seem sad. These are some of the ways we can show love and compassion towards others in Kindy.

Mrs Elaine Fruvall

Pre-Primary G

What an excellent start to the term we have had in PPG! We have enjoyed coming back to school and sharing holiday recounts with our friends. In class we have been learning about the importance of compassion. We discussed how we can be compassionate by showing others in need that we care and by sharing what we have. We watched a short clip about compassion and discussed how we can show compassion at school, at home and in our community.

In Literacy, we read the story, Have You Filled a Bucket Today?, and discussed how we can fill other people’s invisible buckets by being kind and compassionate. We worked in small groups to sort pictures into two groups, bucket fillers and bucket dippers, and brainstormed other things we can do to be a bucket filler. In Religion, we listened to the story, Jairus and his Daughter, and discussed how Jesus showed compassion to Jairus’ family.

Miss Sabrina Saraceni

Year 1G

We have had a great start to Term 3. In Religion, we have been learning about and discussing the Holy Spirit. We have talked about:

  • How God have given us amazing bodies that grow and change.
  • Jesus taught people how to live as God wants us to, and to communicate love.
  • The Holy Spirit helps us in many ways, such as, helping people to know and love God better; gives people the strength to choose to do what is good, and helps people to know when they have done something wrong and to say sorry.
  • The Holy Spirit helps us to have compassion for others.

We discussed the school value of compassion and as a class we decided that the Holy Spirit helps us to – be compassionate, be strong and make good choices!

We combined design with Mathematics by designing and creating a repeating pattern bracelet. In Mathematics, we have also been learning about doubles and near doubles and how they can make maths quicker and easier for us. During Health, we have been learning how to identify an emergency and how to ring 000 for help. During HASS on Monday we made rain makers. Which must have worked because it was a very wet day!

Year 2G

It is Term 3 already, where has this year gone! Year 2G have been busy in Mathematics learning about all of the different strategies we can use for addition. Our favourite strategy is the jump strategy, where we can use blocks and our rulers to solve addition equations. Also, this term we are learning about our school value compassion and how we can demonstrate this quality at OLA. We can show compassion by being kind to others and sharing with our peers.

In Visual Arts this week, we have been exploring the artist Heather Galler, she is known for her Modern Folk-Art styles. This style of art has allowed us to dig into our creativity and demonstrate our knowledge of patterns and shapes. We followed steps on how to create the main design of the hill, house and trees. However, we could pick the shapes and patterns for the inside of the hill, this was the fun part. Next week, we will be colouring our hills, using a combination of textures. We cannot wait to upload our work to SeeSaw to show our parents our amazing masterpieces.

Miss Jade Rotondo

Year 3G

Year 3G have returned to OLA this term super enthusiastic and ready to learn. We have started the new Maths topic of fractions and have loved playing the different games to help us learn about them. In writing, we are learning about some poetic devices that will make our poems interesting. We particularly like the device of alliteration and love saying tongue twisters as quickly as we can. In Religion, we have been looking at the reasons why we make the types of choices that we do.

Through these discussions about how the choices that we make have consequences, we have realised that when we show the value of compassion to others, the consequences are positive and affirming for us all. In our class, we see examples of our students showing compassion to each other every day and have learnt that one simple act of kindness can go a long way.

Mrs Julie Pilatti and Mrs Anella Tollis

Year 4G

Compassion is when we show extra care and respect to someone else. Compassion is when we reach out to others and help them, especially if they are not in the position to be able to help themselves well. This is when we give what we can to help organisations like Caritas.

In 4G, we show compassion by supporting each other, in what we do, what we say and how we do it and how we say it. We give each other encouragement and we give each other respectful space. We see plenty of fine examples of compassion in our classroom every day.

In 4G, we are preparing for our First Holy Communion. This involves a lot of learning about Jesus and his life, and also about what happens at our Mass. We know that all of the parts of the Mass come from a connection with the life story of our Lord, Jesus.

Mrs Dianne Scoble

Year 5G

Wow!! What an exciting beginning to Term Three. Firstly, Mr De Pietro has returned to teach and entertain us with his ‘In the Old Days’ stories. We sincerely appreciated Mr Allsop’s and Miss Rosso’s compassion, for the way they cared and listened to us by stepping into his shoes while he was away. We witnessed compassion at its highest level with all the extra work and smiles Miss Figueira shared with us during Mr D’s absence.

Of course, we began classes from day one! Maths was our first subject reviewing and extending our knowledge of place value numerals to the millions. Those large numbers can sure be a mouthful.

Our RICE focus for Term Three is compassion. In groups, we discussed the meaning of compassion and how we relate to it at home, school and the community. We viewed compassion in a similar way and spoke about the ways it has been shown to us over the years.

Mr Bruno De Pietro

Year 6G

In Year 6G we have watched a short video about, How to Colour Our World with Kindness. The animation highlighted simple ways that we can show compassion in our daily lives such as returning lost property, sharing lunch or lending a helping hand to people in need.

In Technology, we have been learning how to use binary code to create images. The students created an image pattern using pixels. A computer represents this by using two numbers – 1 represents black and is on, 0 represents white and is off.

Students created an image and shared the code with their partner. Their partner had to try and recreate the image by following the code. Next up the students will be learning 3 bit binary code to create images using 9 different colours.
