RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Kindergarten G & M

As Pre-Kindergarten is the first year of school and the first year of being away from Mum and Dad for many of our Pre-Ks we have spent much of our Pre-K day learning about how to respect our wonderful classroom environment, including our friends and teachers.

The Pre-Ks begin their day and show respect by welcoming one another and singing our hello song. At the end of the day we say farewell to our peers with the goodbye song. We show respect to our teachers by encouraging children to look at their teacher as they say ‘good morning’ and ‘good afternoon’ each day.

Respect is embedded in everything we do in Pre-K. We line up and wait patiently to use the toilets before recess and lunch, take turns to wash our hands and use our manners when speaking to each other. Pre-K is full of lots of fun, new learning experiences and all the Pre-Kindys are very excited to be involved. We are learning to work together and respect our peers when playing with the toys in and outside the classroom. By taking turns this ensures we all have an opportunity to be involved in the fun. What a wonderful start to our learning journey and first year at OLA for our little Pre-Ks!

Mrs Ella Galipo

Kindergarten M

In Kindy we are settling in and are having so much fun learning to work together. Learning about what respect means has helped us to understand how to use our equipment, share with our friends and learn safety. We are learning how to care and respect our equipment and how to be kind and gentle in play as we respect our friends. We are also showing respect when we are careful of each other’s space as we share our classroom and outdoors together.

Shrove Tuesday was a wonderful opportunity for our children to show their respect for each other as we made pancakes, taking turns and using our manners as we enjoyed this special day together.

Mrs Kristen Dempster

Pre-Primary M

What an amazing start to PPM! We have enjoyed being in our new classroom, participating in specialist learning areas with different teachers and going to the library to borrow books for the first time.

In class, we have discussed how we show respect and kindness to our friends and our environment, what it looks like and making good choices to keep everyone safe and happy.

We have been busy learning about each other, our families and what makes us unique and special. We have also been very excited about the mysterious visiting eggs. We have shown respect when looking at the eggs in the playground.

Year 1 M

What an excellent start to the year we have had in 1M! We have enjoyed transitioning into our new classroom, wearing our new uniforms, sitting at our very own desks and becoming more independent in looking after our own belongings. We have had lots of fun learning about each other, our families and the things we love.

We have worked together to discuss classroom rules and the importance of respect. We have shared ideas of how showing respect looks like, sounds like and makes us feel. We have enjoyed reading the story, Have You Filled a Bucket Today?, and have discussed how by showing respect we are able to fill other people’s buckets.

Year 2M

Term 1 has started beautifully in Year 2M with lots of learning happening and new friendships developing. We have been looking at including paragraphs in our writing and how to make our sentences more interesting by using adverbs and adjectives. We are loving reading the book, George’s Marvellous Medicine, by Roald Dahl when we get a spare moment and are starting to make some great connections. In Maths, we have mastered fact families and learnt to expand our numbers according to their place value.

In Religion, we have been comparing our families to Jesus’ family and how we do similar things to what Jesus did with Mary and Joseph. Jesus showed great respect to his family and we also try to show that respect to our families too. It has been interesting to think of Jesus with a mum and dad, just like us.

Year 3M

WOW! Year 3 is a busy place to be! Ms Knight says we have all been working really hard and rising to all the challenges she sets.

In Religion, we have been looking at communities and are even trying to form little communities in our school for people who share common interests. We currently have a Sport Club, an Art Club and soon a Minecraft Club (once we get our new log ins!). In order to belong to the community, we know we have to respect the rules of the community so we all can enjoy.

We have been excelling in writing. Ms Knight has been most impressed with our ability to engage readers with our descriptive writing and use of adjectives. She thinks there are definitely some future authors in our class.

In Design and Technologies, we have been investigating factors that affect speed for a marble run. As a class, we decided that slope, turns and bumps or blocks all affect the speed of a marble. In the coming weeks, we will carry out investigations and then complete our own marble run. Enjoy the pictures.

We loved going to Sculptures by the Sea this week and seeing all the amazing art pieces. We discussed things like the materials used, what we thought the artist was trying to say when they built it and, most importantly what we thought of the pieces and why. We look forward to making our own sculptures for the Catholic Education Art Exhibition later this year. Sorry we couldn’t include pictures but we will definitely send some home through Seesaw!

We love Seesaw in 3M! Really, we love everything in 3M!

Ms Vanessa Knight

Year 4M

The first few weeks have been a whirlwind and 4M would like to thank Mrs Grant for all her hard work and dedication she put in during Mr McIntyre’s absence. In class, the students had so much fun learning about collective nouns that it was decided to include some of these examples into 4M’s assembly item.

It was interesting to learn that a group of children can be called ‘an ingratitude of children’ and that a group of parents can be called ‘an embarrassment of parents’.

The students also really enjoyed practising and performing the ‘Evolution of Dance’ during their assembly item and they had a lot of laughs along the way.

All the students have received brand new laptops and every day they are learning new skills. They can now use TEAMS to send messages to their teachers and to each other. The children have also learnt how to save a Word file and upload it to a specific location.

In class, they have discussed classroom rules and expectations along with the importance of showing respect and kindness to others as well as themselves.

The time has flown by and it is hard to believe that it is Week 6 already.

Mr McIntyre

Year 5M

Our 5M class have been focused on their learning, their engagement with their learning and the building of relationships with each other. Key to this is the understanding of respect. We have adopted three aspects of life and learning that we are keen to develop in our classroom. They are: ‘Laugh a Little’, ‘Respect Each Other’ and ‘Just Imagine’. We aim to include this in our everyday life! We respect and value each others’ opinions and we work hard at being sure that we listen well. We do ‘laugh a little’ – at ourselves and with others (but never at others!) and we imagine great things! Part of our imagining was the ‘mystery eggs’ in the PP area! We used our skills of inferring to work out what was going on. Did we solve it? Not quite, but our imaginations were working overtime. A trip to the museum for us this week, we will respect others around us and wear our OLA uniforms proudly.

Mrs Dianne Scoble

Year 6M

The first few weeks have flown by, as we hit the ground running when we returned to school after our extended break! We have had an exciting couple of weeks as we have revised and learnt new concepts to continue on our learning journey.

We received our leadership badges last week and that was so exciting for us! We have been wearing them with respect as the new leaders of the OLA community.

In Visual Arts, we have been learning about ‘Graffiti Art’ and the different forms of this. We know that we show respect towards others’ property and that we don’t just draw or paint on street walls unless asked to. This has been interesting and we have been able to be creative when designing our own graffiti tags.

In English, during grammar and punctuation lessons, we have been learning different types of synonyms and antonyms. This has made writing our narratives more entertaining and pleasurable to read.

What a busy few weeks and we are only four weeks away from holidays!
