RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Primary

In Pre-Primary, we started the term learning more about our school values; Respect, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence. Particularly in the context of NAIDOC Week, we discussed ways to show care and respect towards others. We also read, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud to make more visible the idea of showing kindness and appreciation of others which goes a long way to making this world a happier place for everyone, including ourselves.

We are creating ‘kindness trees’ in our classrooms, with all of the kind and helpful acts children are doing for each other written on leaves and attached to the tree. We hope to fill our trees with so many leaves full of kind actions and words to encourage positive and respectful relationships with others.

Year 2

The Year 2s have had a very busy start to Term 3. In Week 1, we celebrated NAIDOC week with our Year 5 buddies. Ms Knight read us a story about how a family made pandana mats. We also viewed a video which demonstrated how the Aboriginal people worked with each other with integrity to dye the pandana leaves and then weave them together to make mats. Working with integrity and cooperation, the Year 2 students and their Year 5 buddies made a version of a pandana mat using crepe paper. The results were stunning, and they looked very effective. It was a wonderful way for us to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

In class, we have started writing and recording narratives in English. In Mathematics, we are learning how to solve subtraction problems using the jumping back strategy, the counting on strategy and the vertical strategy. The Year 2s are becoming very clever mathematicians!

Year 4

In Year 4, we have been preparing for the Sacrament of Eucharist. We have been learning about the importance of this celebration, and how it will help to strengthen our relationship with Jesus. We have discussed the importance of showing compassion towards all people just like Jesus did.

Last Wednesday, we held a Parent-Child Workshop after school. Thank you to all of the parents who came along to the workshops to be part of the preparation for their child’s First Holy Communion. On Monday, all students participated in the Eucharist Retreat Day facilitated by Karl and Brigette from Faith Retreats. The students were involved in lots of team building activities and were full of rich questions and discussion points throughout the day.

We are well prepared for and look forward to receiving the Body and Blood of Christ to strengthen our spirituality and make us closer to God.

Year 6

Week 3 of Term 3 and we are learning about many new and exciting concepts.

3D models took on a larger perspective than the usual handheld objects. Our objective was to use connector rods to design and construct 3D sculptures that were large enough to hold a student. We designed a multitude of structures across the many groups and displayed the virtue of excellence while being successful in completing this task.

NAIDOC was our focus at the beginning of this term. We discussed Dreaming stories and the role of the indigenous people of Australia in the past and present. We designed posters for the NAIDOC celebrations and displayed these during the assembly presentation.
