RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Kindy

We have had an amazing start to Pre-Kindy! Lots of little faces filled with excitement and enthusiasm have begun their schooling journey. Some leaving their mums and dads for the very first time.

Our day is filled with a lot of fun, reading stories, singing, dancing, playing indoors and exploring outdoors. But we also look forward to when mum, dad or grandma pick us up after a long day. It’s exhausting being 3! We are learning to respect our environment and other people’s spaces. We take care of the toys we play with and when we move around or sit together, we are mindful of our bodies and look out for our classmates.

Ms Belinda Mitchell

Kindergarten G

What a fantastic start we have had in Kindy! The children have settled in well and we are so proud of how far they have come in these short few weeks.

In KG, we have introduced them to the word respect and what this looks likes in our classroom. To us, it means we need to respect our friends and our environment. We need to be kind and gentle towards our classmates. We need to respect other children’s work and not knock down other children’s buildings for example. We respect our friends by speaking kindly, sharing and playing nicely with them.

We know the children will always try their best to be respectful.

Mrs Elaine Fruvall

Pre-Primary G

What an excellent start to the year we have had in PPG! We have enjoyed transitioning into our new classroom, participating in specialist learning areas and going to the library to borrow books. We have had lots of fun learning about each other, our families and what makes us special.

We have worked together to discuss classroom rules and the importance of respect. We have shared ideas of how showing respect looks, sounds and makes us feel. We have been working hard to show respect, by including everyone in our games, sharing things and looking after our classroom equipment. In Health we have been learning about feelings and how different situations make us feel certain ways. We have discussed good choices and poor choices, and how we can be respectful by making good choices at school.

Miss Sabrina Saraceni

Year 1G

In Year 1G we have been exploring what respect looks like, sounds like and feels like. In Health we have talked about how we can respect ourselves and each other in how we talk, work and play with our friends and family. We have based our classroom rules on respect for others, ourselves and the environment.

During Week 1, we drew a self-portrait and looked at how we are different from each other and recorded three things that we are good at doing. In HASS, we have talked about how families are important to us. We have noticed that some families are the same as ours and some are different. One way in which our families are all the same is, our family loves us!

Year 2G

WOW! We are in Year 2! It has been a wonderful start to the year in 2G. In Religion, we have been learning all about our families, and how we can demonstrate the value of respect at school, home and in the community. We are experts at showing respect at school by listening to our teachers, using our manners and helping other people.

During our Art lessons this term, we have created an ‘All About Me’ art piece. We loved creating this art work as it allowed us to dip into our creative side and choose how we wanted to create our masterpieces. We were allowed to be creative and design our coloured backgrounds with different types of materials and share all of the wonderful things that make us special. We loved creating this art piece and they look fabulous displayed in our classroom.

Year 3G

We have hit the ground running in Year 3G this term and the children are already showing an increased amount of responsibility for themselves. It was lovely to read the children’s holiday recounts and they were very excited to share all the wonderful news from their break. We have started looking at writing narratives and how to hook the reader right from the very beginning.

In Art, we created our RICE tree together and discussed the focus value of respect. The children have also created a beautiful piece of artwork using the initial of their first names. They look fabulous. In Religion, we have learnt about different community groups that we belong to. In Year 3, the children have access to the Chrome Books, which brings such excitement. They have learnt how to log in, search for a website, scroll up and down with the mouse pad, create capital letters when writing and shut down. With this use of the Chrome Books comes an added responsibility and we also discussed how the value of respect for technology is very important.

Mrs Julie Pilatti and Mrs Anella Tollis

Year 4G

We have had a flying start to the year in 4G! We love being upstairs and we understand all the BIG responsibilities that go with this. We have talked about respect and have built this into our class expectations. We know that respect means being very mindful of ourselves and others. For us this means that we are respectful of our own equipment and of others as well. This looks like: putting things away, taking care of equipment, not using others equipment without permission and having our own equipment.

We were very excited to take delivery of our laptops last week, and we are learning all sorts of things about the responsible and respectful use of equipment like this. We love using our computers and we are focussing on being respectful and learning to become sensible digital citizens as well.

We have also been learning about ‘God’s rules’, we know these as the Ten Commandments. A really important one, which is all about respect is Commandment 5:  Obey your parents. We try hard to do this!

Mrs Dianne Scoble

Year 5G

The Year 5G class has commenced this year in a positive and pastoral manner with smiles and excitement all round. There were stories of their adventures during the summer holidays and the excitement of beginning a new school year with new teachers and new friends.

It is safe to say the students have taken to their new classrooms and teachers with a positive outlook and attitude. Their innate willingness to do well and affirmative pastoral care has displayed respect to all those they come into contact with. The students acknowledge how everyone is gifted in different ways and how we all belong to and add to the OLA school community.

Mr Bruno De Pietro

Year 6G

The students in 6G have got off to a fantastic start to the year and have settled in well to their new roles as leaders of the school. They have discussed in depth how they can use the school values of RICE to help them in their ministry roles. In class they learnt about the Parable of the Talents and had to identify different character traits that can help them to show respect for themselves as well as display the school value of respect every day.
