Book Week

What a blast we have had during Book Week this year! It has been a whirlwind of events, competitions, costumes and most of all stories!

We celebrated the theme, Old Worlds, New Worlds and Other Worlds in the library with our very own portal into Narnia, through the Wardrobe! Children enjoyed spending time relaxing and reading together in this fantasy world from Mrs Dale’s favourite book, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, by C.S Lewis.

The Scholastic Book Fair was a very popular event with crowds of students and families attending each day. We sold over $4600 worth of books this year, giving us $1432 in commission to spend on new books. Mrs Dale has selected some great new titles to add to the library with more to come over the coming months. Thank you to the Brunini and McCubbin families for your generosity in donating books to the library also. The OLA students will enjoy reading the books selected by Sophia, Amalia, Keegan and Jude.

Our Costume Parade is always a highlight and this year the staff and students looked incredible dressed as their favourite book characters. We were so lucky to enjoy the parade outdoors in the sunshine and show off our great costumes.

Bedtime Stories Night was a big hit! The library was packed with families getting comfy in the library to read together. Batman (Mr Morris) did a fantastic job entertaining everyone with a mash-up of our beloved traditional fairy tales. Thank you to all the families who supported this evening and helped to make it such an enjoyable evening.

Year 5 were very lucky to be invited to attend a Meet and Greet session with author, Sally Murphy. Sally’s latest verse novel, Worse Things, received an honour award from the Children’s Book Council of Australia during Book Week, so this was a golden opportunity for our Year 5 students to find out how to write a novel from an accomplished WA author. Thank you to Dianella Public Library for providing this opportunity to our students.

Kindy were treated to a special visit from Dianella Librarian, Clare, who came to read stories, sing songs and give each student their Better Beginnings bags with a free picture book inside. The Kindy students were so well behaved and enjoyed every minute of this visit, despite being very tired after such a big day!

During lunchtimes during Book Week, Mrs Dale ran special activities for our Years 1-6 students to enjoy. Years 1 and 2 came to enjoy some colouring in and Years 3-6 competed in a Book Week quiz. In addition to this, there was also a competition to name the title of the book that pictured characters came from. Winners for this competition will be announced at the assembly on Wednesday 1 September.

It was such a busy week, but very rewarding to see students engaging in reading and enjoying the activities put on for them. Mrs Dale is looking forward to a restful end to the term and sharing more stories with you all!
