RICE is Alive at OLA!

Humanities and Social Sciences

Pre-Primary

This term we have been learning about Geography. We have looked at places people live in and belong to such as our neighbourhood and the places that are special to us, such as our bedroom and school. The students showed compassion when participating in class discussions and explaining the importance of the places we live in. We were excited to go onto Google Earth to find the bird’s eye view of our school and to see all the special features of our school. We completed a mapping activity to show how to get to the library from our classroom.

Years 1-6

We have been enjoying learning new and interesting things during our HaSS sessions this term. It is wonderful to see our students displaying all the OLA values, and in particular, the Term 3 focus value – compassion.

Years 1, 2, and 6 have been learning about Geography. During these sessions, students have been showing compassion for others by listening and respecting everyone else’s views when discussing matters about our amazing world.

Years 3 and 4 have been learning about Civics and Citizenship. They have shown compassion when discussing the reasons why rules and laws are broken and the consequences of these actions.

Economics has been the focus of study for Year 5. We have explored needs, wants, goods, services and scarcity. Students discussed the three types of resources; natural, human and capital. They demonstrated compassion when they discussed the human aspects of producing a good or providing a service.

Physical Education

Pre-Primary
Pre-Primary lessons have explored the range of skills and events of athletics this term. There have been sprint races, long jump, beanbag throwing, and we have practised our team games for the upcoming Athletics Carnival. We have shown compassion throughout the term by sharing the equipment we use, taking turns to race, jump or have a go at an activity.

Year 1 and Year 2
In Year 1 and Year 2, we have trained for the Athletics Carnival by practising our team games and working on individual skills to help us become super athletes. We started the term by competing in some very fast sprint races, seeing how far we could leap in the long jump and how far we could throw our beanbag shotputs. Together we practised all of our team games so we are experts at the carnival. Throughout the term, we have shown compassion amongst our peers by working together in team games, helping each other to improve on our jumping and throwing technique, and always helping our peers in warm up games.

Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6
Physical Education classes for our middle and senior year levels have been busy and exciting this term. Everything has been focused around athletics, specifically our field events including the throws. We have practised proper technique and then had a recording session for shotput, discus and javelin in preparation for the Athletics Carnival. We showed our RICE value of compassion by listening carefully to instructions on how to safely and correctly throw each object, being safe and allowing students to throw with space and time and supporting our peers when waiting our turn to throw.

Science

Pre-Primary

In Pre-Primary Science lessons, we have been learning all about how animals and objects move. By building our own wooden ramps, we tested out if objects could roll, slide, bounce or spin. Our RICE value of compassion is shown by how we listen so carefully and follow instructions, as well as how, we behave so beautifully during our group work.

Year One

This term in Year One Science lessons, we are learning all about the properties of light and sound. We have learnt that white light is made up of all the colours in the rainbow. We enjoyed experimenting with a variety of musical instruments and discovered by striking, blowing, or shaking, different sounds can be made. Compassion was shown in the way we share our equipment during group work and showing patience with each other.

Year Two

In Year Two Science lessons this term, we have been investigating different forces. The effects of applying a push or pull to bean bags was great fun! We were introduced to the concept of gravity, which is an invisible force affecting objects. Sinking and floating investigations were also a highlight, where we discovered light objects often float and heavy objects will sink. We showed compassion by taking care of our equipment and carefully tidying up after our investigations.

Year Three

In Year Three, we have been learning about heat energy and how different materials can be conductors or insulators. We enjoyed discovering how to read temperature on a thermometer. We also loved predicting which materials would make our plastic cups the best insulators of heat, then testing out each material using a thermometer to record the temperature changes. Compassion was evident in the way we carefully used and shared our thermometers and in the way we took turns in our group.

Year Four

In our Physical Sciences strand, we are learning about push and pull forces. We made a catapult and investigated how we could move small objects using the force of pushing down on the arms of the catapult. It was great fun challenging ourselves to get our objects to land in a cup. Our RICE value of compassion was shown by sharing our ideas, our equipment and taking turns. We also showed compassion by active listening and quickly packing away all our equipment at the end of each lesson.

Year Five

In Science, we enjoyed investigating the properties of light and how the eye perceives colour. The concepts of how we perceive transparent, translucent and opaque objects were covered by conducting experiments using torches and a variety of materials. We also enjoyed using our computers to discover the properties of shadows using red, green and blue lights in an online platform. Compassion was shown by willingly, sharing our ideas, equipment and computer knowledge with others.

Year Six

In Year Six Science, we are learning about different sources of energy and about simple circuits this term. We used the circuit kits to experiment in creating a functioning circuit that would light a bulb or sound a buzzer. We were also introduced to notating a simple circuit using specific symbols for each component.
