RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Primary

We started this term in Pre-Primary deepening our understanding of how we can be a good friend to others, whether we like the same things or different things. We talked about how we show respect to each other and role-played social situations to find ways to work out problems with our friends in a respectful way. We have also been reading stories from the Bible and realised that Jesus had to resolve some problems with his friends, and he had feelings too!

We read many stories last week to remind us of all the ways our mums are amazing, with a focus on the story, Harriet, You’ll Drive Me Wild!. We made personal connections to the text by sharing many stories of silly accidents and funny occasions when our mums were there to fix it all and love us still, no matter how crazy it made them!

Year 2

In Digital Technology this term, the children have been learning how to create algorithms. We have created several algorithms like how to get ready in the morning and an algorithm to get our desks organised when we first come into class. On Wednesday, we created an algorithm focusing on how to plant a seed. After we had our steps in the correct order, we planted the lavender seeds and now we will watch with great interest to see if they grow.

We have demonstrated our school value of integrity by making the right choices when we are at school and in the playground. We show this by including others in games and activities, listening to our teachers and peers when they are speaking and staying focused when we are learning. We have especially enjoyed our new Religious Education unit of work called, Empowered to Love, this term. We are learning about Confirmation and receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit. We know we can use this gift to show love towards our family, friends, teachers and community.

Year 4

We have had a wonderful start to 2019 and the introduction of the new RICE Values has been at the forefront of our days in Year 4. We understand the importance of these values in the way we interact with others and conduct ourselves as representatives of OLA.

Over the last two weeks, we have been looking at parables and Jesus’ teachings within the bible. Jesus was a model of compassion and we endeavour to show compassion towards our peers by helping and supporting them whenever we can. In particular, we have looked at The Parable of the Sower and the significance of God’s word in our lives and actions. By being compassionate people, we are responding to God’s presence in our lives and our seed is falling in the rich and fertile soil, as reflected in the parable.

Year 6

WOW!! Week 3 of Term 2 already! We have been busy preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. As we learn and grow in faith, we have been asked to choose a Saint of choice that we wish to look up to in years to come. Choosing the Saint and creating a Poster, has been an interesting and informative component of this journey. We are very excited about the next few weeks and we look forward to sharing this with family and friends.

In Mathematics this week, we have been looking at angles! We have been able to determine the different types of angles and how to measure them. We have shown the value of Excellence through persevering and achieving high results in our work. In English, we have been arguing our point of view in an argument. This has been a fun, engaging and enjoyable experience. We have learnt how gestures, voice and volume can change an argument. This is preparing us for our persuasive texts next week. Over the weekend, our mums were presented with a personal gift from us, to thank them for being the best mums in the world.
