RICE is Alive at OLA!

Kindergarten G

We have had a great start back at Kindy this term and enjoyed an exciting Australian Animal incursion on Monday. We loved to see the lizards, pythons and koala, and those that were brave even had a pat of the animals!

We have had some super ‘Stars of the Week’ in Kindy G. This acknowledges how special and unique each of our children are and how much we value their compassion and care of others, celebrate their strengths and recognise their good qualities. The children are becoming very good at giving thoughtful and honest compliments to others in our class.

Mrs Michelle Symmons

Pre-Primary G

We have been exploring the school’s value of compassion. We have talked about how compassion means we care about others and treat them with kindness. Compassion might look like giving a hug, making a card, asking someone to join in a game, or saying something kind to help a friend or family member who is feeling sad or upset.

During Religious Education, we have been learning that the Bible teaches us that God loves and cares for people and wants people to care for others. We have had an exciting start to the term. We had a magical creature visit and build a nest, leave clues and shrink us into small pictures. All the excitement provided the opportunity for lots of oral language including, hypothesising and justifying their ideas. The children have had fun creating story scenarios with the air, land and water dinosaur world.

Year 1G

In Year One, we have been getting ready for our class assembly. Our assembly is based on the things we have learnt during NAIDOC Week. We read the story, Tiddalik, and painted pictures of the greedy frog. We read, The Rainbow Serpent, and made a picture together of the gigantic snake. We have also spent time during Science learning about the six Noongar seasons. We have learnt some noongar language too, like ‘djildjit’ means fish, and ‘yongka’ means kangaroo.

During Religion, we have been discussing how the Holy Spirit helps us in our daily lives to make good choices. When we play with others, we try to treat others with respect and kindness, but we also look out for others who are sad, lonely or hurt. We have talked about how when we feel sorry for someone and want to help them, we are showing compassion.

Year 2G

2G has had a great start to Term 3, it is lovely to see students well rested after having a great holiday. Our RICE Value focus for Term 3 is compassion. Through our discussions, students were able to give examples of how we demonstrate compassion at home, school and in the community.

On Wednesday, we enjoyed Open Night at OLA. It was great to see so many families visit our classroom. All classes contributed to the NAIDOC display in the Fr. O’Mara Centre, Year 2 created a poster and animals connected to the Bunuru season.

In Mathematics, 2G have been learning about the relationship between multiplication and division. All students put their knowledge into practise by completing their own ‘Making Equal Groups Poster’. This gave them the opportunity to make groups, write a matching story and number sentences.

After researching information about a country, students completed writing their information report about the country of their choice. We are all learning a lot about so many countries in 2G!

Year 3G

Term 3 has got off to a racing start in 3G! We warmly welcomed Mrs Tollis to our class and showed her how fabulous 3G is. We have written recounts about our jam packed, fun filled holidays and have been rehearsing for our Performing Arts performance this week. It was also a lot of fun showing off our work to our parents on Open Night.

In Maths, we have been applying our knowledge of area and perimeter to create farms in Minecraft Education. Who knew Maths could be some much fun? We don’t even realise we are learning while multiplying the length and width to work out the area of a chicken pen, cow paddock and a barn.

In Religion, we have refined our knowledge of what a sin is, and we have also discussed the two great commandments. By showing compassion to each other in our words and actions, we are living out the message that God wanted Jesus to teach us.

We look forward to the adventures that Term 3 will bring us.

Mrs Anella Tollis and Mrs Jodie McCarthy

Year 4G

The children listened to part of the book, The Seed of Compassion, Lessons from the Life and Teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. We discussed how his mother planted the seed of compassion in him. We all liked the quote, “She showed me as a child that it was possible to treat all people with warm-heartedness and to help ease their suffering.”

Xavier – For example, at the Olympics, lots of people show compassion by congratulating each other and hugging.

Ken – I saw Mo helping Samuel with Religion work and then lending Sam his ruler.

Lochie – When my brother hurt himself, I went to see if he was okay. When I hurt myself when I was on my motorbike, my cousin came to check on me.

Lorenzo – When my fish didn’t have food for three days I gave food to him. At home my sister was hurt and I gave an ice pack to her.

Mo – My entire family showed compassion when all of us gave money to my uncle in South Africa to help with his job.

Year 5G

Wow!! Term 3 and we don’t believe how quickly this fun Year 5 experience is moving along. We finished, a COVID interrupted, Term 2 completing biographies of individuals who have made a positive difference to the world and people around them.

We wrote an introduction of our chosen person and the many reasons why we look upon this person with fascination. Our teachers asked us to present an oral summary to the class. We found this a daunting experience at first, but soon realised we were all friends and had no reason to worry.

NAIDOC week is upon us and we were fortunate to be given art materials to sculpture and design Indigenous inspired creations. These will be displayed around the school.

Overall, we look forward to Term 3 and the many experiences we will share as a group, while demonstrating the RICE Value of compassion.

Mr Bruno De Pietro

Year 6G

Compassion being our RICE focus for Term 3 has linked in nicely, as we prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. We have been looking at Saints and have discussed and identified ways that we could live like they did. Some of our ideas include caring for others, always looking for the best in people and helping those in need. As we reflect on this, we are inspired by our Saints and their acts, that portray the value of compassion.

On top of preparing for Confirmation, we were busy getting our classroom looking spectacular for Open Night. We all worked hard to ensure we completed each piece of work to the highest standard possible. Our favourite piece of work that was displayed, was our Visual Arts ‘Interesting Self Portraits’, which reflected each of our unique individual personalities and interests. A big thanks to those who came in to see the hard work that has taken place in 6G!
