RICE is Alive at OLA!

Pre-Primary

We have been reading some familiar fairytales this term and the children have enjoyed acting out and retelling the stories with various props, puppets and costumes. We even made porridge like the three bears and have painted some scary wolves and magical castles in art. This has led us to discussions about how the characters behave in these stories and making connections in our lives about the right choices to make if we were in these situations. We have talked about ways to show compassion to others in our class and what this looks like. We drew pictures of ways we can show love to others at school or at home to our families.

Year 2

The Year 2 classes have been very busy over the past two weeks. The students worked extremely hard to prepare the classrooms for Open Night. The sense of pride that the children experienced whilst showing their parents around was wonderful to see. Of course, the Milos were a crowd favourite too. On Thursday, the children made choc-chip cookies to give to their dad’s for Father’s Day. A big thank you to all of the mums who came to help us on the day.

We have been learning about the new reading strategy of compare and contrast and have read several different versions of the same story. This week, our two focus texts were, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Star, and, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Thong. The children displayed the value of excellence while completing a Venn diagram to show what was the same about the two books and what was different about the two books.

Year 4

At the Open Night last Wednesday, we took the opportunity to show off our classroom and all of the work we have completed so far this term. The students demonstrated respect for their classroom, belongings, hard work and their peers. They should be proud of the huge effort they have put into their learning so far in Year 4.

We have been busy investigating floating and sinking in our Design and Technologies lessons over the last two weeks. We tested suitable materials that float and learnt about the importance of buoyancy and density and how they impact on objects floating…or sinking! Here are some of our designs!

Year 6

The past two weeks have been all about MKR (My Kitchen Rules), we were asked to cook up our own or nonna’s recipes which we shared with our peers and a number of OLA teachers as impartial judges. Our imaginations were set free with presentations in Italian accents, dressing in Japanese garb, siblings stealing the limelight and the occasional excited pet.

Our creations varied from sweet to savoury, with bonus points from Mr D for anything that could be eaten along with a short black coffee. We filmed our preparation at home, sharing the cooking experience with our class and teachers. The integrity displayed by our peers and teachers, tasting our wares and providing positive feedback was appreciated by us all. An experience we will carry with us for a long time.
